Worst Public Schools in South Carolina (list)

Bottom_Of_The_Barrel.jpg
Have a child or grandchild in grades Kindergarten through eighth grade? You need to check this list!

Yesterday’s revelation that a mere 1-in-5 public school has met federal AYP performance standards was a huge blow to Jim Rex and his monolithic big government education machine.

Now we have more details about the 715 of 875 elementary and middle schools that failed, and about those schools for which failure is a long term trend.

Below is a detailed list of the K-8 public schools which not only failed to meet their standards this year, but which have a history of sustained annual failure.

While all public schools in South Carolina are under-performing by national and international standards, these 256 schools are the absolute bottom of the barrel:

  1. I am SOOOOOOOO sick of the school bashing. My school is on your ridiculous “list” and it’s a very good school. Not making ayp doesn’t make it a failure.

Why don’t you do something constructive for a big fat change?

  2. “Your” school is “very good?”
    Which school is it?
These are all schools where low test scores, wealth and racial performance gaps, and a lack of absolute performance are a documented long term trend.
You may be unambitious and pleased with kids attending under performing schools, but it is unfair for you to expect other parents to respond similarly.

  3. When will the private school data be released?

Oh, that’s right – their accountability is people quit going. Of course, the students who are responsible for the low public school numbers would never make it into private schools in the first place.

However, even private schools could not pass under the guidelines of NCLB.

  4. that’s right – when private schools under-perform, the parents pull their kids
but as this list indicates, the countless failing public schools are simply immortal, more and more money is thrown at them, and they just keep on failing the kids!
you must be really proud – only four of your schools made the list!

  5. Why shouldn’t someone leave a school that isn’t educating their kid? Are you so concerned about these places keeping their doors open that you’ll sacrifice someone else’s future to do it?

  6. We just moved to South Carolina so I was relieved NOT to see our son’s school on the list. However, it’s a far cry from where he was previously.

  7. Before anyone begins to bash the different schools, they must understand how the data is collected, read, and what factors affect the data. In some cases 1 student not meeting the required “Proficient” or “Advanced” score on the state test can cause a school not to meet AYP. It sounds as if the education department needs to “educate” the public about how these scores work. I also have a feeling that the administrators are not necessarily educating their staff on how the data works. My administrator has shared all with us at our school, and it is an eye opener as to how 1 student can cause a school not to meet AYP. Now having said that, I will give kudos to my school. We have met and always have met AYP.
    :-)

  8. How can a website be founded on a premise like AYP that is ridiculous and erroneous to begin with? Two of the schools in Pendleton are fine schools where children are valued and not treated as products. Your argument is tired and lacks a legitimacy. The infrastructure for privatizing schools does not exist. Can I place a bet that you are white and wealthy?

  9. The AYP results, as well as the 49 percent on-time graduation rate, and worst in the nation SAT/ACT scores speak for themselves.

Every child in this state has a basic civil right to a quality education – the public schools continue to deny them this right.

Sadly, many of those we are the most short-changed by these policies are unwilling to look critically at the data. Effective teachers, at both public and private schools across the state, know that the unique challenges and learning styles of each children require a responsive and innovative range of classroom and instruction styles. The one-size-fits-all model being dictated from Columbia and spending $11,480 per child is incapable of delivering this.

  10. Robert C. Smith

My job forced me to S.C. several years ago and the Public School System in the state is really a sad, sad situation. Imagine what the results would look like if all the dropouts where still attending and taking the tests. I’m now spending a ton of money sending my kids to a Private School, which is still not up to par with the Public Schools in the state we left. Politicians need to quit spending state money to pave roads to their favorite hunting spots.

  11. This list is SERIOUSLY flawed, don’t get me wrong, I know that SC schools are underperforming, but FAIRFIELD county has the WORST schools in the state. My husband is a teacher & the people that run that district are crazy & never do what’s best for the students or teachers. I can’t believe not ONE school is listed & I know that 90% of these schools listed are much better than any school in Fairfield School District. Most parents from Winnsboro would do ANYTHING for their kids to go to a school in Spartanburg, Lexington county, etc. no matter what this standard says!

  12. SC navtive current VA Teacher

I am a SC native…trying to convince my NJ husband to move back home…gotta tell you the biggest obstacle is South Carolina’s horrible school rep…and I can’t argue with him because it has been that way since I was a student 25 years ago! Maybe SC needs have higher standards for their teachers, and PAY them more!!! Technology in the classroom will only go so far when the teachers using it isn’t qualified!

  13. My daughter will be going to one of these middle schools in Aug. It is up the PARENTS to get involved and help make changes!! This school does not offer sports to girls. THIS MOM is going to change that one! It only takes 1 parent to start making changes for their kids! Stop playing the balme game and GET INVOLVED with your kid!!!!!!!

  14. Just because a school doesn’t meet AYP doesn’t mean it’s a bad school. AYP is determined by more than just test scores, absenteeism, free and reduced lunch… etc..
I don’t know about you, but I want my kids to learn more than just how to pass a stupid test… how about learning how to function in the real world?

  15. my school is th best school in south carolina and that is denmark olar elem, denmark olar middle school.i want my kids to learn not to just pass a stupid test i want my kids to get their dergge like their mother so if you have any thing to say u better tex me back

  16. my school has ayp. when i get off the computer my child is going on ayp. denmark has ayp ok in your face WHATT!!!!!!!!!!
