South Carolina State Superintendent of Education Dr. Jim Rex admits to the existence of “dropout factories,” which he blames for the state’s shameful 55.6% on-time graduation rate.
Video footage was taken of Rex speaking at Education Department orchestrated “Town Hall meeting” at Greenville’s J.L. Mann High School on May 28, 2009.
Despite the shameful dropout rate, Rex is committed to blocking serious reform being push by parents and educators across the state.
Jim Rex needs to develop a backbone and shake things up in South Carolina schools. School Choice is one powerful way to do so. Shame on him. Shame on us for electing him!

It seems we are having trouble getting it right for ANY kids in South Carolina. Students needing great assistance meeting minimum standards of course suffer, and we hear about that all the time. But those performing far above standards are suffering tremendously as well, and we don’t even see it! What we do to our “best and brightest” is especially shameful as we really need to help them reach their full potential so they can lead us out of messes like we’ve created! I have a child that will become an official “statistic” as a DROP OUT because she is going to be skipping high school to go directly to college in order to get an appropriate education. We live in a “good” school district and yet our school administration has been COMPLETELY inflexible in the way that it has worked with us as we tried to challenge our daughter. However, the school is so narrowly focused on the end of year ineffective test scores that we have that they refuse to allow students to study material beyond the grade level they we be tested on. Ludicrous.
